Viscose Filament Yarn Overview:

Viscose Filament Yarn (VFY) also known as Rayon Filament Yarn is a versatile natural fibre which is silky and soft in texture. Due to its drape, flexible and glossy appearance, VFY makes an incredible choice for many textile factories to manufacture fabrics like chiffon, crepe, georgettes and others.  VFY is a natural yarn that is made from cellulose pulp that dissolves such as bamboo pulp, cotton pulp, wood pulp and others. VFY is woven with the help of cutting-edge technology using high quality raw materials to make Viscose embroidery thread that runs gently on embroidery machines. Due to their ability of being resistant to high temperatures up to 950 C on washing and keeping their texture and beauty maintained, they are widely used in sportswear, interior textiles, leather shoes, jeans and accessories. The other technologies that are highly used in the manufacturing of  VFY include Continuous Spun Yarn (CSY), Pot Spun Yarn (PSY) and  Spool Spun Yarn ( SSY). The steps that are involved in manufacturing process include: Steeping, Shredding, Aging, Xanthation, Dissolving, Ripening, Filtering, Degassing, Spinning and Drawing. During the process of production of VFY, cellulose is reacted with caustic soda. In ripening process, depolymerisation takes place where Carbon disulphide is added, which forms an orange colure crumb known as Cellulose Xanthate. The orange crumb i.e., Cellulose Xanthate gets further dissolved with caustic soda and forms a Viscose orange solution which is further pumped through a spinneret into diluted sulphuric acid bath, where the regenerated cellulose turns into fine filaments.

Viscose Filament Yarn Applications:

VFY find its applications in variety of clothing purposes including dresses, sportswear, gym wear, dresses, lingerie , interiors and other home textiles. With respect to deniers, due to  embroidery and weaving applications, the VFY market is segmented into 120D, 150D, 300D, and 600D. The VFY produces fabric that has extremely similar qualities such as highly absorbent, comfortable, soft and good drapability which makes it difficult to distinguish from natural fibres making it suitable for knitwear and weaving industry worldwide. VFY could be the future of textiles in the upcoming years. VFY is moderately inexpensive and conveys a luxury at much cheaper prices. Due to low investments in VFY industry, Countries like China and India shares a major demand of Viscose Filaments. Rise in demand of fabrics that can easily blend with cotton, polyester and others with high quality and cheaper prices is expected to propel the VFY market during the forecast period.

Environmental Impact:

The chemicals that are used in the production of Viscose Filament Yarn include Carbon disulphide, which is a toxic solvent and can have adverse health effects. However, VFY is derived naturally and is a plant-based fibre, that is not considered hazardous or polluting.

Due to the onset of the Global Crises, VFY industries were highly impacted due to the fall in textile sector. As the manufacturers halted their operations following government’s restrictions and nationwide lockdowns, affected the  global supply chain and producer’s overall production. However, It is expected to improve during the year end because of the gradual reopening of economy and resuming operations by the companies. Rising demand from textile industry which is driving an upsurge in overall demand of VFY worldwide expect for the nations including India, that is experiencing a second wave of global crises.

Viscose Filament Yarn Regional Outlook:

Region wise, Asia-Pacific region dominates the VFY market followed by North America and Europe in 2020. The dominance of the APAC region is highly impacted by the continuous growth of textile industry across Asian countries leading a huge demand for VFY for various applications. The global VFY market is further segmented into Latin America Middle East & Africa.

“Being linked to the downstream application such as Clothing, Auto Industries and home textiles etc, the global Viscose Filament Yarn Industry has shown a significant growth along with the growing population and shifting in the consumer preference. It is projected that in the upcoming years, India is going to become the world’s fifth biggest consumer market. In addition, growing per capita income worldwide poised a stronger outlook to the country’s VFY demand. The nationwide lockdown and government’s restrictions affected the global  supply chain logistics and caused immediate shortage of raw materials hence increased the prices of VFY in textile industry. Meanwhile, China serves as the major region for growth as well as with sufficiently installed capacities. With new competitors emerging across the Asian acetone market, it is extremely important to keep an eye which region will grab the biggest market share during the forecast period .” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research-based management consulting firm promoting ChemAnalyst worldwide.
